As an image consultant, I always suggest that clients have a base wardrobe of staples/classics that they can update with trendier pieces to keep costs down. Since there is such a small window for us folks that are blessed with four seasons to adorn our beautiful fall clothes, if you only pick up one trendy item this fall, I suggest looking for a duster. This will go with multiple ensembles allowing you to get in on a trend that offers your more bang for your buck.
Dusters are basically a light, loose-fitting long coat. They have been around forever, but have made their way into the must-haves pieces for 2018. The original dusters were full-length, light-colored canvas or linen coats worn by horsemen to protect their clothing from trail dust. Modern dusters come in an array of fabrics and colours, but for this season, we want to focus on the cozy sweater versions.
The one I am wearing is actually a purchase I made when I was studying fashion in Toronto (which was 15 years ago!) I remember walking into Aritzia ( it was just a NEW store then) and falling in love with the luxurious mohair and shade of camel. I was a student at the time, so luckily, I got it on sale! And although I haven’t worn it every year since then, I kept it because of it’s classic style and quality. Now I get to enjoy it again this season (testament to purchasing quality classics when you can!).
Dusters can act as a jacket for the in-between weather, when it’s not too warm, but not too cold. They come in a variety of styles; so you will be sure to find one that fits your lifestyle, whether it’s a more steamlined work appropriate version or an over-sized casual weekend style (or both!). Whatever your lifestyle, this is a must-have piece you should pick up now (before it gets too cold and we need winter coats!).
So, to recap, if you want an instant update for your fall wardrobe, a duster is the purchase to make! It will keep you looking current and on point this season, sending Uber cozy-chic vibes. Also, it scores bonus points if you’re a person that craves comfort (like me). What’s more comfortable then a big cozy sweater!?
