Throughout history, pop culture has played a key role influcencing fashion trends. In an era where everything is shared and communicated through a “status” and “social media”, it’s no surprise the fall/winter (2017/18) runways were taken over by garments and accessories embellished with slogans and logos, forging the statement Tee as fave amongst the trendsetters.
The statement Tee, not so subtly, taps into the emotional quotient of consumers in a big way. Whether people want to communicate a message through a slogan, feel a sense of status with a designer logo, or simply evoke some nostalgia, it garners “a feeling” and whether you think so or not, we are all emotional creatures that want ALL the feels.
That said, aside from the psychology that drives this trend, it really is a fun one to incorporate into your wardrobe. It plays well with basically any other pattern or print. It will offer a “cool” factor to girly print, such a polka dot, or preppy print like plaid. It can also work easily with other trends (I.e., leopard print). You can dress it up or down, but probably not something you would wear to the office. (Unless you’re working in a creative environment, I’d stick to wearing on the weekends.)
A few ideas for weekend wear: for a night out on the town, try pairing a statement Tee of your choice with a dressy pair plaid pants or leather skirt and some ankle booties. You can also keep it casual by pairing it with denim jeans and blazers or a duster sweater as shown on me. You can lend it an edgy or preppy vibe depending on what your shirt says and how you style it. So it can be a lot of fun playing with the persona!
I do suggest NOT overdoing it. I mean, you don’t need to wear a statement tee every day of the week! Find a couple that speak to you and your style and have fun mixing and matching with different wardrobe pieces. Who knows, it might just end up being a great conversational piece.
I personally love a white Tee with black text (as seen on me). The colour combo just works with so much. Do I consider myself a rebel? Not in the true sense, but this shirt did jump out to me, so maybe I am – a little? Anyone that knows me, knows I do like to march to the beat of my own drum and will always stand up for what I believe in, regardless if it’s popular. I like to call it, unapologetically me. Perhaps I will find a Tee expressing this. 🙂
