Happy 70th Birthday, Mom!

My mom turns 70 on September 3rd. Since my siblings and I all live in different places, we took the opportunity to surprise her with an early celebration, while we were all home in Cape Breton! 63D16FE2-0A28-4277-863E-8DFC2C6F13BB

We kept it simple and intimate, with just us (her children) and our families. We planned a weekend getaway with everyone, which is something we try to do every summer. We rented cabins in the beautiful Margaree Valley, Nova Scotia for a weekend of “glamping” and family time at Normaway Inn. We picked up a chocolate cake with boiled frosting from one of her favourite bakeries, The Cedar House. Then we surprised her with a trip to a place she has always wanted to go for as long as I can remember – Nashville! Our plans are to go next November, which will give us time to plan and also a year under my belt with the new babe (due this November!). After dinner we enjoyed some local fiddle music followed by a campfire where we read mom some well wishes from friends and extended family (thanks to all that took the time to send).

It felt so good to see my mom so happy. It also was so wonderful to get us all together to celebrate her and get some pictures to capture all the memories. It was perfect to have all her children and grandchildren present for such an important milestone. We had a lot of laughs trying to get the photos, as not everyone in my family loves to get pics as much as me – haha. Also the mosquitos were driving us crazy, but we managed to get some good ones to remember the day by!

In the process of planning this for my mom, it came to my mind, that I feel like we (as in a society) don’t celebrate people enough. It really doesn’t have to be that complicated. It doesn’t take much to do a little extra to make someone feel a little extra. Whether it’s for a birthday or just because, taking that added time to do or say something nice – even as simple as making a compliment I person or on social media (this is the era), can go a long way and really brighten someone’s day, which should in turn make you feel good also!

My advice is: don’t wait for someone to be gone to celebrate them or say/do something nice for them. Do it now! We have no idea how long we will be here on earth. So make the most of your time! Tell and show your loved ones how much they mean to you! Encourage them and go the extra mile for them. On the other side of that, stop chasing approval of people that don’t appreciate or value your time and energy and save it to share with those that do.

Mom, I can’t believe you are 70! Sometimes I forget you’re actually a senior. I guess you’re only as old as you feel. I hope I am as fun and active as you at your age. We love you and appreciate all you have done for us. Your love, encouragement and support has been a rock to us and our families. You continue to give us strength and we are so blessed to have you as our mother. Thanking God for another year with you and pray God continues to bless you with good health, favour and so much more. You deserve it all. Happy early Birthday! Xx
